Position Summary

The Planner/Buyer is a key member of the Supply Chain team responsible for driving excellence and continuous improvement in the supply chain. Day-to-day responsibility as buyer for certain materials types and services. Project work includes process improvement across all areas of the supply chain including sourcing, production scheduling, materials, inventory management, and warehouse operations. Contribute to meeting department goals for freight in cost, purchase price variance, inventory turns, and on-time delivery. The Planner/Buyer will also assume assigned production planning function and provide vacation coverage to other staff in the Supply Chain team, including the production scheduler and supply chain specialist.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to)

Purchasing - 50%

  • Perform daily buying activities for assigned material types and services including price negotiation, setting up new suppliers, and expediting as required.

  • Identify, develop and manage effective relationships with existing and potential suppliers of goods and services to meet the established cost, quality, and delivery targets.

  • Negotiate cost reductions for capital equipment purchases.

  • Execute projects related to accuracy of all inventories, material transaction timeliness, warehouse organization and space allocation, procurement, planning, scheduling, warehousing, and kitting.

  • Support expansion of the Company’s ERP system software and optimize use of material planning (MRP), capacity planning (CRP), scheduling, inventory, and warehouse management modules.

  • Document and then streamline the order fulfillment process.

  • Coordinate with quality, production, engineering, and customer service to improve on-time delivery (OTD).

  • Adhere to established company policies, procedures, terms and conditions, and legal matters that affect purchasing policies.

Production Planning - 50%

  • Plan manufacturing schedule(s) for all production departments

  • Create, release and close manufacturing shop order(s)

  • Verify raw material dues date(s) to assure the maintenance of acceptable levels of inventory, while minimizing raw material shortages

  • Review material requirements and advise purchasing of raw material needs

  • Advise Commercial department of current lead times

  • Maintain the “Customer Supplied Inventory”

  • Reconcile “Open Orders Reports” vs. “CRP” to ensure all customer orders are scheduled

  • Create, release, and enter daily cycle counts to ensure accurate inventory levels

  • Alter schedule as needed due to unforeseen circumstances

  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
This position requires a Bachelor of Science degree in Supply Chain Management, Operations, Industrial Engineering, Business or equivalent experience.

Training and Experience:

  • 2-3 years’ experience in supply chain management function within a manufacturing environment

  • Understanding of lean manufacturing, six sigma, and process improvement concepts

  • Working knowledge and understanding of ERP/MRP/CRP systems and their use in a manufacturing environment

Knowledge of:
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, and Project

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to demonstrate solid written and oral communication skills

  • Good analytical problem-solving ability

  • Financial skills including cost modeling, cost analysis, make vs. buy analysis

  • Ability to leverage metrics and other tools to drive supplier and internal performance

Certifications:
APICS CSCP or CPIM certification a plus

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
