During dead-end filtration the solution to be filtered passes the membrane surface orthogonally and not parallelly as with crossflow filtration.
The particles in the feed are being rejected by the membrane and pile up on the membrane surface. This accumulation is called cover layer or cake layer. The cake layer grows in the course of the filtration cycle resulting in an increase of the feed pressure.

In contrast to the crossflow filtration the formation of a cover layer is fostered during dead-end filtration. Therefore, not only the pore size of the membrane but also the cover layer are determining factors for the effective retention of solids and bacteria.
